January Favorites

January was a month where I just wanted to relax. My roommate and I were back home with our parents and still are, except for when we had to return for our semester exam. We finished that and then stayed home since, so I’ve just been relaxing a lot – I just wish I could say the same thing about my wallet… During January I spent a lot of money on clothes and makeup because I kept telling myself that I deserved to be spoiled… By me. I originally had in mind that I only wanted to spend money on things that were on sale, but that definitely didn’t happen, so I just stayed at home and admired the beautiful things that I bought while being a broke student, while counting the days for the next paycheck. However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t get to love a couple of things because I certainly did!

Sleek Solstice highlighting palette. Was that a favorite? Absolutely yes! I went on a little trip to Sephora (it always starts with an innocent trip to Sephora) and wanted to see what they had on sale. You can see the other items that I got in my January Sales Haul post. The sale items were great and I definitely managed to get my hands on a couple of things. But. I also really wanted to try the Solstice highlighting palette from Sleek because I had heard good things about it and it was supposed to be really pigmented. I swatched it in the store and was quite surprised at how much color there was on my hands and I had barely touched it. I did what any other person with a weak willpower would do – I put it in the basket with the (insert crazy number of own choice) other things laying there waiting to come with me home.

The palette has three powders and one creamy. I haven’t worn the creamy one or the white on yet, but the pink and gold/bronzy ones are amazing and the palette costs 130 kr. in Sephora and 120 kr. on House of Stars.

The next thing that I’ve really been loving this past month is the NYX soft matte lip cream, in the color ‘Copenhagen’. I’ve been talking about this color for such a long time, and every time I would go to a store which sells them, I would tell my friends about this color. I really love dark/purple colors because they give a simple look a nice twist. Before Christmas my friend Helena (you met her in my previous post) came to my Christmas party. She came earlier because she wanted me to do her hair and makeup. As she entered my room she carried a bag with two gifts, one that I was allowed to open right away and the other, I had to open on Christmas Eve. The first gift was the NYX lip cream in the color ‘Copenhagen’. I was so surprised and wasn’t expecting it at all. So sweet!

If there’s a brand that I love more than anything, it’s definitely Marc Jacobs. The brand is amazing and their makeup line proves it. Back in June I was on the lookout for a new mascara. A short resume of my lashes would be: short, brown and basically non-existent. Finding a mascara that gives me voluminous and thick lashes is really hard. I’ve tried a lot of mascaras, so I asked a nice lady working at Sephora about some good mascaras, and she suggested the Too Faced – Better Than Sex, but I already had that one and it didn’t do much for me, so she then suggested the ‘They’re Real’ by Benefit and it didn’t do much for me either. I also told her that my budget was between 100-200 kr.

But, as I looked at her lashes I was shocked. She had the most beautiful long lashes and they weren’t fake! I pointed that out and she told me that it was a bit pricey, but it was from Marc Jacobs. Stop, just hold it right there. Did you say Marc Jacobs? Give it to me right now! It cost around 250 kr. which I was prepared to pay because I mean it was just 50 kr. over my budget, so it was fine. I have not regret it since. I use it almost every day and I get the thickest and longest lashes ever. Sometimes my roommate even asks me whether I’m wearing false lashes. You decide how dramatic you want your lashes to look, which is what I love the most about this mascara.

The second item from Marc Jacobs, that I’ve been loving since its mention in my January Sales Haul. It’s the coconut primer, and  if you have dry skin, this is definitely the primer for you. It doesn’t have that strong coconut smell, which I absolutely hate despite loving coconut oil in general. The scent is very light and smells really good. The application is light and you can really feel your face being moisturized. It’s also a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for a good primer and you’re willing to splurge, the Marc Jacobs primer is the one, and it costs around 350 kr. in Sephora.

When I was in London back in August I went to a place called Westfield Mall. There were a lot of high end brands and luxurious ones as well, and then there were the good old stores with lots of sales, which are the ones I love the most. I already knew in advance that I was going there because of the L.A. Girl concealer. Unfortunately, I’ve completely forgotten the name of the store that sells them, but they didn’t cost me more than 3-4 pounds. The product is so pigmented considering the price. Another thing which, I particularly like about it is the brush at the end, so you just press the tube a bit and then put the product on your cheekbones – and blend.

Last, but not least is the Bioderma makeup remover. I bought it back in September, where I became more conscious about the chemical called PHMB – polyaminopropyl biguanide. It supposedly is a chemical that may cause cancer, which was found in the Garnier micellar water makeup remover, which I stopped using after finding out, and moved on to one from La Roche Posay,  assuming that it didn’t contain that chemical because I bought it from the pharmacy. However, it actually did. So I ended up not using that one as well, which then led me to the Bioderma. It doesn’t contain that chemical at all, and removes my makeup super fast and thoroughly. I bought mine from the pharmacy for around 100 kr. If you’re concerned about makeup removers that are potentially/supposedly dangerous, I would suggest you get the Bioderma one.
